Cars in ditches. On some occasions competitors have been all to loath to leave their cars, and run to the sites. If there was anything wide enough to drive down they would. One time we had to recover Bill Norths car from a sunken lane when it was sideways on, and the car was longer than the width of the lane !!!!..
Another time Bill (again) thought he could drive through mud a foot deep, well it went well until they found a sunken tree trunk across their path. They stopped and sunk deeper, to be recovered later by being towed out by another Competitors Land Rover with a winch.
Finally, a Chris Plummer had finished the final and was fetching one of his teams car, when they happened on a car in a ditch with a whip aerial on top, ‘Amateur? They thought lets stop and help.’ It turned out to be the organisers car Derek Newman, who was due at the tea with the all prizes etc. Chris and co organised police and recovery vehicle and keep Derek warm (suffering from shock). When eventually the mob arrived very late for the tea, they were about to give the RSGB Trophy and, 1st. Prize, to another competitor who finished at 16:10, until Chris looked at his finish time 15:50 and turned in his form to find that he had not only been a Good Samaritan, but also won the contest by a full twenty minutes.
